Athletic Events
Athletics are a major part of the culture of a high school. My school has numerous sports for both males and females. During each home event (and road event), the school provides an administrator to supervise those fans in attendance at the event. Being a sports fan myself, supervising athletic events was not a painful experience for me. I enjoy watching my students competing in athletic competitions. The students enjoy seeing there teachers attend their after school events, as well. Most of the time, the AP on duty at these events can be a spectator. I enjoy watching all sports; however, the length of a track meet begins to wear on you after 4-5 hours. There were not any incidents during the events I attended but I would have liked to have seen how an AP handled an incident at one of the events. Supervising at athletic events is another duty of administrators that is easily overlooked because of all of the other tasks during the school day that an administrator performs. Administrators are not paid extra to supervise these events. Their supervision is expected under the ‘perform other duties as assigned’ stipulation of their contract. If an administrator is not a sports fan, I could definitely see how this duty could be very boring and cumbersome.
